Meet the Doctor

Dr. James Alexander grew up just a few miles from Saint Augustine. In fact, while in high school, he practically lived on St. Augustine beach.  During his childhood he participated in a myriad of activities including soccer, baseball, football, tennis, BMX racing, and music. Although he graduated near the top of his class and most of his friends were making plans for college, “Jimmy” felt the calling to do something a little different. With the signature of his mother, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps at the ripe old age of 17.

The Marine Corps gave many gifts to Dr. Alexander and helped mold him into the man he is today. Having exemplified the core values of honor, courage, and commitment, Private First Class Alexander graduated MCRD Parris Island as Honor Graduate of Platoon 1102. He received meritorious promotion and the Leatherneck Award. After completing Marine Combat Training, he was sent to Little Creek, VA for the Armed Forces School of Music, and eventually landed in San Diego, CA, as a member of Marine Band San Diego. This allowed him to serve his country like his father who served in Vietnam, while pursuing his love of music. During his time in the corps, he learned to be appreciative of what he had, while developing a deep-seated integrity that has served as an integral component of his character. That being said, Dr. Alexander began viewing music as more of a hobby than a life-long profession. He quickly found dentistry to be ideal in that it provided a professional service aspect, along with an amalgamation of science and art. He never looked back.

Dr. Alexander attended Jacksonville University, and completed 11 straight semesters, with no summer break. Meanwhile, he was working the early morning or midnight shifts at UPS, raising his children, engaging in community service, and performing in multiple ensembles in the music program. Knowing the cards were stacked against him, Dr. A worked twice as hard. He graduated summa cum laude with a 4.0 GPA, University Honors, “Academic Excellence Award”, and a BS in Biology. He had realized his goal, and obtained admission to his school of first choice, the University of Florida College of Dentistry.

When Dr. Alexander began dental school, he found himself, at least once per day, smiling because of the opportunity he had been given. He has never forgotten that feeling. He saw dental school as only the beginning of a lifelong journey. Although he spent much time on the President’s and Dean’s list and won an ethics award in oral presentation, within a couple of months after earning his Doctor of Dental Medicine degree (the first doctorate in his family since the late 1800’s), Dr. A began quenching his thirst for continuing education. In the first year following graduation alone, he amassed an amazing 343 hours. He has trained in endodontics, attended the Nash Institute, and graduated the prestigious Implant Maxicourse in New York City, along with other various courses.

Today, Dr. Alexander lives in the community he serves with his beautiful wife and three wonderful kids. Having the privilege of humble beginnings, Dr. Alexander has developed a truly unique perspective on treating his patients and life in general. Due to this fact, everyone is treated equally, regardless of age or background, or particular insurance plan.  Although his practice is state of the art, Dr. Alexander feels that healthcare has lost its way, and he strives to provide old-fashioned customer service, focusing on each individual patient, rather than the assembly line mentality. He decided very early on that everyone deserved quality comprehensive care. This vision has permeated throughout his dental practice, from the team members to the uncompromised quality of his materials, labs, and specialists he refers to.  Dr. Alexander practices with a single motto in mind; “Do what is right for the patient, and everything else will follow.” At Alexander Dental, you will truly receive family, cosmetic, and implant dentistry you can believe in.
